How to Care for Fresh Flowers

Tips to Make Your Blooms Last Longer

What’s even better than a bouquet of fresh flowers is one that can be enjoyed for longer that you imagined. Arranging at one of our flower bars is, of course, a favorite activity of ours, but knowing that participants are able to delight in their creations long after an event with a Bouquet Box Flower Bar makes us even happier. We share with them as well as our customers at Bouquet Box that proper flower care is essential to ensure blooms stay vibrant and beautiful. Following these simple tips will make flowers last longer and continue to brighten any space.

  1. Change the Water Using Lukewarm Temperature

Change the water every two days, and be sure to remove any debris such as fallen petals or leaves, to prevent bacterial growth, which can reduce the lifespan of your flowers. When filling your vase, always use lukewarm water, as it helps flowers absorb water more efficiently. Avoid using cold or hot water, as it can shock the blooms.

  2. Re-trim the Stems Properly

When changing the water, it’s a good opportunity to re-trim the stems of your flower arrangement. In fact, one of the most important steps in flower care is trimming the stems. We trim the stems just before placing flowers out for display at a Bouquet Box Flower Bar and encourage guests to do again in a few days. Use floral shears, sharp scissors or a floral knife to cut about one inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle. Trimming stems allows a fresh spot for flowers to hydrate and doing so at an angle creates a bigger surface area to allow flowers to absorb more water and nutrients. Another tip: Trim the stems underwater to prevent air bubbles from blocking water uptake.

  3. Add Flower Food

A Bouquet Box Flower Bar arrangement will already be treated with floral food, but as you change your water, be sure to add more. Flower food is an essential part of floral arranging and flower care as it provides much needed nutrients and helps prevent bacterial buildup, keeping your blooms fresh longer.

  4. Remove Submerged Leaves

To prevent rotting and bacteria growth, another key floral care tip for any flower arrangement is to remove any intact leaves that fall below the water line in the vase. Leaves in the water can quickly decompose, causing bacterial growth and flowers to wilt faster.

  5. Keep Flowers in a Cool Spot

Placement is key to maintaining fresh flowers. Keep bouquets away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Flowers thrive in cooler environments but won’t do well right in front of an air-conditioning vent either. It’s best to find a spot away from vents and with indirect light to help prolong their beauty.
